What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a safe, concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted body hair. The laser penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. When the laser hits the skin, it damages the hair follicle that produces hair. When the hair follicle has been damaged, it will inhibit or delay future hair growth in that area. Several treatments are required to permanently remove hair from certain areas of the body due to your hair growth cycle. Maintenance treatments may be required after desired results are achieved to prevent regrowth. At each appointment, you can expect about a 10%-15% reduction in hair growth.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
- Elimination or significant reduction of unwanted hair growth
- Elimination of irritation from shaving and/or waxing
- Smooth skin
- Brightens the skin
Ideal Candidates For Laser Hair Removal
A consultation with one of our South Okanagan Laser and Skin industry experts will be scheduled prior to any laser hair removal appointment to assess whether you would make an ideal candidate for the treatment. The ideal candidate for laser hair removal will have hair that is deeper in colour than their skin tone. Because of the way the laser targets the hair, it must be attracted to the melanin in the hair follicle. People see the most effective results when they have fair skin, with dark hair. However, South Okanagan Laser and Skin uses the Fotona Dynamis Nd:YAG laser, which is known for working very well on darker skin tones as well. The Fotona Dynamis Nd:YAG laser uses a method of delivery called Avalanche FRAC3® that reduces discomfort and improves the efficacy of the treatment for darker skin tones.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment and Recovery
During your laser hair removal treatment at South Okanagan Laser and Skin Centre in Penticton, you can expect mild to medium levels of discomfort depending on the area being treated, and your personal pain tolerance. Most patients describe the feeling as a small elastic band being snapped onto the skin. You will be asked to wear eye protection during the appointment. Your appointment will last between 15-60 minutes depending on the area you are treating. You can return to day-to-day activities immediately after your appointment, however, we do not recommend sun exposure without SPF. Hair maintenance between appointments can be done by shaving, but we do not recommend you get the area waxed, threaded, or plucked.
